Sorry, I Gave at the Office

“Sorry, I gave at the office,” the man with the beady eyes and pointy nose growled, slamming the door in Natalie’s face.

“What the fuck ever, asshole,” Natalie whispered to herself, staring at the peeling paint on the slammed door. It always amazed her how rude people could be, especially during her last three weeks collecting for Fresh Start; it had shown Natalie a side of humanity she was eager to forget.

It was perfectly fine if you didn’t want to give to charity. Not everyone had disposable income, and some people needed charity themselves. But even if you wanted to be a selfish dick, and not give anything to anyone ever, even if you could, why not just say so? Why lie? There was no way that fucker had given at the office.

Natalie trudged from the house, then crossed the street and rounded the block on her way to the next bank of houses.

She had been walking the neighborhoods for hours, all morning and now into the early afternoon, knocking on strangers’ doors and hoping to raise money for Fresh Start, a local charity that helped out-of-work people in the city find jobs tailored to their skill set so they could get quickly back on their feet.

The charity was important to Natalie, since she’d lost her job and house in early 2009, and Fresh Start had helped her quickly recover by finding her a job in an accounting firm. Turns out, Franklin was right — you couldn’t escape death or taxes, even in a recession. And since Natalie wouldn’t ever want to work in a morgue, she was happy her skills with numbers had landed her a sweet spot at Dodge & Helms.

She’d been working as a number cruncher at Dodge & Helms for the last three years, and now that tax season was over, she wanted to take a month off to help Fresh Start with their annual charity drive.

It was amazing that people wouldn't give money to a cause like Fresh Start. That last guy was nearly the straw to break her camel’s back, but she knew she had to keep going, despite it being approximately 4,000 degrees outside.

Come on, Natalie, just keep going. Plenty of people never gave up on you.

Natalie smiled, scanning her clipboard. She wanted to squeeze in another three blocks before calling it a day, though she was dying to get home and was flirting with the thought of quitting early. But a flashback to how bad it had been for her two years earlier pushed her feet across the concrete.

It felt hotter than Afghanistan, not that she’d ever been there. But Natalie hadn’t been prepared, and could feel the sweat beading across her lower back and behind the bend in her knees. Maybe one more block, then she could grab something to eat, and cool down a little before finishing her list.

Natalie kept walking, knocking, and swallowing rejection for another full hour until finally finding herself in front of the last house before her promised break.
